A Sustainable Future Through Sustainable Furniture, and Beyond

When talking about sustainability, many of us think about recycling practice, climate change and eco-friendly products. Whilst these are very important aspects of creating a greener environment, a sustainable future is not only defined by these measurements.

The Division for Sustainable Development Goals (DSGD) in the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) established 17 goals with the aim of “peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future.”

With a profit-for-purpose model, Winya did not stop at just selling sustainable furniture. We take a step further by investing in responsible sourcing and production of our products, creating traineeships and apprenticeships for the Indigenous community, and educating our clients on how to effectively and appropriately engage with other Indigenous businesses.

Our commitment to “punching above our weight” has allowed us to become the first ever Australian business to be awarded by the United Nations Global Compact for Sustainable Development Goals and the Economic Inclusion of Indigenous Peoples.

Over the past ten years, we’ve seen more and more like-minded leaders and businesses joining together to help Australia meet the Sustainable Development Goals. The latest change to the Green Build Council’s Green Star program is another step closer to improving Indigenous community economic inclusion and reducing inequality in Australia. A Green Star credit is now available for various levels of engagement with a genuine Indigenous owned business like Winya.

Through working with Winya, our clients has access to furnishing products made with materials designed by Indigenous artists and manufactured in facilities that supports Indigenous employment in remote communities, a range of sustainable furniture designed with future in mind, and the opportunity to participate in our take-back circular economy program.

At Winya, this is how we strive to help building a sustainable future, one piece of furniture at a time.
