Dry Season
Artist: Damien and Yilpi Marks
A very detailed painting that describes a dry season in Damien’s homeland, Mount Liebig. The painting illustrates aspects of landscape and culture around that area that was told to Damien by his great-grandparents. There are women sitting with their children collecting bush potatoes and preparing for inma (ceremony). A man (wati) sits down with his waru (spear) and controls burnings so the dry spinifex burns up for good fruits to grow afterward.
Minyma Tjukurpa (Women’s Dreaming)
Artist: Yaritji Heffernan
This old dreaming story from Tjutaku Ngura (country) is told by Yaritji’s mother – a story about women’s ceremony. The women are sitting around fires inside caves where three water holes are in the middle. This is a place for women to tell stories and make lots of mai (food), and a place for women only.
Seven Sisters
Artist: Andrea Adamson Tiger
Andrea tells us about the seven sisters and their travels through the country as they are pursued by Wati (Man) Nyiru. Nyiru fell in love with the sisters, and even though they were of the wrong skin name, he was desperate to make them his. As the women fled from Wati Nyiru they created the country and landscape around Andrea’s home, Mala.
